For the few years leading up to this record, Billy Dean has struggled to find a way to match his talents with the more energized, pop-based sound of ?90s country music. With Real Man, he stops trying to fit into the formulas presented by other singers and returns to the acoustic-based style that originally helped him establish a following. In doing so, he sought production assistance from one of his childhood heroes, singer David Gates, former leader of the ?70s acoustic pop band, Bread. Gates helps Dean bring depth to his overtly sincere songwriting by adding a string section behind the acoustic guitar and straightforward rhythms. The results shore up Dean's strengths nicely. --Michael McCall

5 out of 5 stars Billy Sings Like a Real Man   February 7, 2000
How does a real man sing? Simple. With emotion. With conviction. With style. With great respect for both his music and his audience. He does this beautifully in this, his best CD to date. It doesn't hurt that he's partnered once again with Bread's David Gates. The result is a smooth, easy to listen to collection, highlighted by "Voices Singing," probably the best ballad Billy's recorded, and the emotionally simple "By My Song." These two songs alone make it worth the price of the CD. Keep at it, Billy. It's a great performance!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!   October 25, 1999

Excellent songs and voice! I appericate Billy's style that a real man doesn't need to "shout" to be heard. Still, I can feel the power from his tender voice. Also, those kids' background vocals were wonderful! Excellent songs, tender voices, and precious values for all country music fans!...:)

4 out of 5 stars Billy Dean---Back to his roots!   June 6, 1999

Yes, this album is different from what we've heard in the past few years from Billy. He has struggled to get back to the roots of the music we all fell in love with, and with "Real Man", he has accomplished this! I have been a great fan of Billy's since the first time "Somewhere In My Broken Heart" aired, and this album takes me back to the Billy we fell in love with then.....Billy Dean, the balladeer! Too bad the record company didn't promote this album, or "It's What I Do" better. They are some of the best work he's done, since his debut album. Sit back with a nice glass of chardonnay, close your eyes and enjoy these wonderful ballads!

I have been a fan of Billy Dean for quite sometime now, and I feel that this new CD is his best. The songs are filled with emotion. My favorite song would have to be "Voices Singing", partially because I know all the kids that sing with him in the song, but also because it holds a wonderful message. If you are questioning whether or not to buy this CD, question no more...it is absolutely wonderful =o)

2 out of 5 stars SLOW!! SLOWER!! SLOWEST!!   March 20, 1999

I hate giving one of my all time favorite singers only two stars but I have to be honest. I have been a HUGE fan of Billy's for years! I even met him, saw him in concert everything. But this new cd is too slow!! Its boring and I probably would have given it only one star if I wasn't such a die hard fan. If your thinking about buying a cd of his buy "It's What I Do", it's his BEST cd yet!! I also highly recommend his greatest hits. Hes a great performer, talented artist, great looking guy, but this cd is just not my style. Sorry Billy.
