Editorial Reviews:

Description
Learn to play fiddle in the real old-time style with this lesson in traditional downbow fiddling. Brad Leftwich shows how to produce the flowing, rhythmic sound that has delighted square dancers and music lovers for generations. He teaches tunings, drone strings and double stops, simple variations and several specific bow licks, including short and long saw-strokes and the shuffle. Brad's breakdown of "Shortenin' Bread," "Sugar Hill," "Old Jimmy Sutton," "Black-Eyed Susie," "Great Big Taters" and "Jeff Sturgeon" will benefit all fiddlers who want to learn this exciting style.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not really for beginner violinists or fiddle players   January 8, 2008
I bought this video expecting to be able to learn how to play fiddle, as the description states "for beginners", but was disappointed to learn that you had to know EVERY thing about playing the violin before you could even attempt to learn these lessons. It would probably be great for someone who is just looking for a slightly different sound and bowing technique. Otherwise pretty instructive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner's Fiddling DVD   January 9, 2007
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

This is an excellent instructional DVD for beginning fiddlers of all ages (especially adults). The DVD offers clear, step-by-step instructions to help beginners, including clear bowing and fingering instructions and a step-by-step process in learning tunes. What is also helpful is Mr. Leftwich first plays the tune, breaks it down into components, and then puts the fiddle tune back together at the end of the instructions. I am also grateful that the DVD includes sheet music for those of us who like the notation to help remember the tune
