5 out of 5 stars A Joy   April 14, 2007
What I like about Wynton Marsalis' trumpet sound is its shrill clear tones that give it a sort of independence no matter the orchestral accompaniment in the background. The timeless melodies of Antonio Vivaldi come to life with Marsalis playing his instrument. It's a joy to witness the handshake across the centuries between geniuses through the glory of music.

1 out of 5 stars Why is he so big??   October 15, 2005

At best a mediocre jazz trumpeter-he should stick to classical music. One would be far better off purchasing music from any great classic trumpet player such as Clifford Brown, Dizzy, Louis, Miles, Fats Navarro, Hot Lips Page, Buck Clayton,- or any other superior player. Just because he plays a Monette and worships Louis doesn't mean he can play jazz.

4 out of 5 stars one of my favorites   May 15, 2004

my 2 favorite classical albums are "Bernstein Appalachian Spring Suite" and this one. Wynton Marsalis is unbelievably gifted and it's awesome to listen to. It's impossible how Wynton Marsalis plays Flight of the Bumblebee, blows me away everytime I hear it.
4 stars, not 5 because last few tracks aren't that great, but 14 out of 17 MONEY tracks makes this one of my alltime favs.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Selection of Wynton's Work   August 28, 2002

Marsalis cannot be regarded as anything but one of the great musicians of the last few decades. His historic feat of winning Grammy awards in both the Jazz AND Classical genres is a testament to his musical genius. While Wynton's contribution and leadership in the jazz world has been of greater consequence, his classical brilliance shouldn't be overlooked.

These selections are a testament to Marsalis' amazing trumpet-playing. Whatever your musical background, you will be thrilled and enthralled by his mastery of the instrument.

Technically speaking, Marsalis is impeccable, with an ebullient tone to compliment his flawless technique. His virtuosic abilities are on full display in Jules Levy's "Grand Russian Fantasia", a mainstay of old virtuoso cornetists like Herbert Clarke. Also entertaining is Marsalis' take on Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major", with Marsalis dubbing himself over twice to create a soaring trumpet trio.

A wonderful addition to your classical or brass collection.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoying Wynton in many ways   August 2, 2001

This excellent recording of Wynton Marsalis is wonderful not only for trumpet players, but for anyone. The many different styles presented in this one recording provide a refreshening variety and the overall effect is very pleasing to the mind as well as the ear. The only reason for rating it four stars is that five stars should be given sparingly to add emphasis- just as standing ovations should. I reccommend this recording for anyone who loves the pure sound of brass in any form.
