  elements of 4 patterns April 15, 2008
Four different rhythms are detailed: slow Samba, 6/8, Calypso and Inang (Malaysia). See and hear how each musician's part interacts with the others. The DVD is quite helpful for professional-level players. Steve and 2 other percussionists go through the 4 rhythmic patterns, building them layer by layer. There is often footage of 3 percussionists together, then overdubbed footage of them playing other instruments as an ensemble, then still more overdubbed footage of adding 'color' with windchimes, triangle, shakers, etc. The point is to see how there might be 6-10 layers of percussion fitting together smoothly, and this video is very good at showing that. The percussion trio plays on camera with a prerecorded world jazz ensemble (featuring tasty flute). This is not a video for showing you basic techniques for how to play the instruments, but techniques for "constructing" advanced percussion grooves. Instruments are many and include: congas, cajon, timbales, bells & blocks, shakers, shekere, bongos, 3 from Brazil (surdo, cuica, pandeiro), djembe, 'djambe'/dumbek, udu, bata, and lots of smaller items. There are 2 bonus performance videos, and you can also watch the primary four performances without all the explanations if you want to play along and practice your chops. Highly recommended.
