| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com With his warm, rich tenor and emotionally powerful songs, Brendan James announces himself as an artist-to-watch on his dazzling debut album The Day Is Brave. Rooted in the classic singer/songwriter tradition, with its introspective lyrics and unforgettable melodies, the album is 11 tracks of stunning songcraft: elegant, earthy, and displaying a total lack of artifice that is rare in the pop world these days.
Influenced by the understated simplicity of the Carly Simon, James Taylor, and Carole King records he grew up with, James knew he wanted his debut to sound natural and unaffected. The phrase stripped-down is so overused, and bare-bones doesn t really describe it, he says, but I wanted the simplicity of the art to come through. I wanted it to have tasteful blend of folk and pop influences. Brendan James Photos

Very good overall, very impressive voice, but sounds over-produced October 6, 2008 I saw Brendan last night in Toronto. He was opening for Alison Moyet. I am very impressed with his songwriting and he has an AMAZING voice. My only criticism of this CD is that it sounds a bit over-produced. His great voice is overpowered by the wall of music behind him. They should have put the sound level up on his voice and toned down the music. He sounds incredible live.
Excellent - the best CD I've listened to in a very long time September 23, 2008 I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this CD - am I ever glad that I did! Brendan James is an artist to watch, for certain. His style is unique and a breath of fresh air compared to everything else that's out there these days. I can't give this CD a high enough recommendation and suggest that everyone looking for something different be sure to check it out!
Excellent but not my taste September 18, 2008 A well done alblum but the songs turn out to not be ones that I enjoy
Not for me September 12, 2008 I saw that this CD received very favorable reviews so to be fair I listened to it again. I did not find it to my liking. I am a big fan of James Blunt, Jim Brickman, Billy Joel and more artists of this style. Yet I found myself not liking this CD. After the first song, "Green", I wanted no more. Maybe if the piano music was highlighted more than the voice. I found too many songs just irritating. So, Brendan, I am glad that you have an audience. Good Luck in your career and don't let my opinion stop you from moving forward.

According to my lastfm account, I have listened to the songs on Brendan James debut CD "The Day is Brave" 377 times since July of this year. I wish I could say that this was because I have immensely enjoyed his music, but, sadly, it is because I have wanted to say something constructive about it without coming off as being too negative. For this little conundrum I have been successful.
James does write nice music for the piano. While nothing overly energetic or complex, he does write enjoyable music that can fade easily into the background while one is doing other activities such as washing the dishes or reading a book. The problem with the album, besides being a piece of over produced, saccharine schlock, is the fact that James seems to be on of the most self-centered individuals in the world of music. This is not to say that other musicians are not as self-centered as James or that James his truly that self-centered, but every song on the album concentrates on him alone and I do not believe I have heard "I" so many times during an 11 song album. It gets a bit repetitive after awhile and while there are some standouts on the album such as "Green" and "Manchester," others such as "All I Can See" are just irritating and one could cut the syrup with a knife.
Maybe good music to some, this album left me a bit flat, but it will serve its purpose when I have a stack of dishes to wash.
