Excellent gem from Naxos May 23, 2003 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have been buying Naxos cds for about two years now, and I have a collection of about 100. I have been satisfied with every single recording. Especially this one. I had no idea that Schubert had written octets. I really enjoy octets, so I knew I had to buy this cd right away, and I am very glad I did. The Schubert Ensemble of Budapest plays wonderfully. The sound is very good, and overall a wonderful recording.
Decent Recording of Schubert Octets November 20, 2001 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
Franz Schubert penned the D.803 Octet in F Major in 1824, modelling it after the immensely popular Septet, Op.20 of Beethoven. It has the same number of movements (six). Schubert's Octet adds a second violin as the eighth instrument. This Naxos recording is a decent one, played by the Schubert Ensemble of Budapest. It is a longer work than Beethoven's, stretching to over 57 minutes. But Schubert has many entertaining ideas woven in that make this Octet enjoyable to listen to. Recommended.
