This CD is excellent - worth the investment of time to listen to and adds intelligent dimension to any modern classical collection. - Some background about the composer and this CD.

Ellsworth Milburn, was one of the founders and emeritus professor of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Milburn, whose early career included work as a piano accompanist for Second City, went on to a nearly 25-year career at Rice, where his compositions included string quartets that many believe are among the finest ever written. ~ A quote from Arthur Gottschalk ... "Milburn is undoubtedly one of the strongest and most versatile musicians I have known. His string quartets are among the finest in contemporary literature." Milburn's approach to music, Gottschalk says, is "risky and yet always with good sense of proportion, perspective and humor."

Milburn is a brilliant composer and deserves to have, at last, a national reputation. His colors are fresh and dynamic, his orchestration pristine, and his development of ideas compelling.
