Not Mozart May 6, 2008 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I am finding it extremely difficult to "enter" these interpretations - it just doesn't sound like Mozart to me. There is little spontaneity, the playing is stiff and contrived. Courtly grace seems more appropriate to Haydn - and indeed the Haydn's Opus 33 recording by Q. Mosaiques, which I have, is very beautiful - but with Mozart they miss the lightness of step required to bring these works to life. I am disappointed - I still feel the need to buy other interpretations for greater access to these quartets This group (Q Mosaiques) has a cult following - but there is no truth in music. And, certainly, a monolithic approach is going to be limited and ultimately boring when applied consistently across composers and works.

I have listened to just one CD by Quatuor Mosaiques: Mozart's String Quartets No. 16 (in E-flat Major, K. 428) and No. 17 (in B flat Major, K. 458, also know as "The Hunt"). The Adagio from The Hunt is miraculously beautiful.
Mozart on original instruments. December 19, 2006 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is a superb recording. The Quatuor Mosaiques is one of the finest quartets in the world. Their intonation is spectacular, and achieved without the crutch of constant vibrato. Their performances are stylistically informed, but never pedantic. Above all, though, their musicality, thorough understanding of the music, and ability to shape each piece dramatically without falling into Romantic excess are what place them a notch or two above any other original instrument quartet (and practically every other quartet as well). Please give them a try and help spread the word (their Haydn recordings are also breathtaking.)
