Quintessential Renaissance recording November 11, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Out of all the recordings I've listened to, this one stands above them all! Authentic instruments are performed with a level of command rarely heard. The recording itself is also of the highest quality, bringing these forgotten period instruments back to life. The musicians perform with a remarkable high level of performance, making this CD one of my favorites to listen to (over and over..). I can't recommend this recording enough!

What a great disc. To anyone who likes the sound of cornetts and sackbuts, this cd will be very appealing. The Castello sonatas are marvellous, especially Sonata IV which displays the most virtuosic sackbut playing I have ever heard. The pieces by Falconieri, Merula, and Ortiz which employ ground basses are a delight, moving along with tremendous energy.
Le Sacqueboutieres de Toulouse are every bit as good as Concerto Palatino or His Majesty's Cornetts and Sagbutts. Pick this up if early brass tickles your ear.
