Many fans of 20th Century classical music will most likely have some works by Wuorinen in their collections; he was hard to avoid in the 1970's when Nonesuch issued a good number of his works on their bargain-priced albums. I have many of those great albums, and it is good to see that Naxos is reissuing CD's originally released on the Harmonia Mundi label. Wuorinen has always been a rigorous, highly disciplined serial composer, but that does not make his work forbidding in any sense. His music exudes a great deal of humanity and humor as well as having a serious and cerebral side. I find the serious side of his music challenging, and ultimately rewarding, listening.
