| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description The greatest Marvin Gaye record never made, from the multi-instrumentalist who began musical life playing in The Edgar Broughton Band. Shades of The Beach Boys, Joe Meek and Pigeonhed, prog rock and psychedelia are all present here. The secret is to stop trying to figure it out and just enjoy. 1996 release. Standard jewel case.
Album Details The one-time member of the Edgar Broughton Band issued this uncanny, psychedelia-tinged self titled solo debut in 1996 through Island Records. Features twelve prog-rock-inspired, zany, unconventional tunes.

This is all that's right about music May 4, 2008 Also first time to write a review on Amazon and a music industry professional from LA, I just wanted to mention that this album is truly incredible. I've had it for many years, bought several copies because I lost them or for the purpose as gifts for friends and it has remained to be my favorite if I really had to pick one single album. Rumor has it that Mr Taylor retired from making music, which is an unbelievable shame, since this man has talents like I've never seen and never heard before, both in their width of varying skills as well as in the depth of these skills. If there's one album I could recommend to anyone, it would be this one; it's an exceptional work of art. Do music a favor and buy it, maybe it'll help bringing Mr Taylor back to the musically active; music needs him.
Lewis Taylor Is A Genius! February 28, 2007 Lewis is one of my favorite artists. This album is amazing & I plan on recommending it to everyone! It's such a shame that the music industry didn't recognize his talent while they had the chance.
So darn funky January 10, 2007 I just discovered Lewis in the past month or so, thanks to Yahoo music. As a person who grew up singing, but has let that talent die as "real life" has slowly crept in, Lewis stirs up in me what I've always loved music for. His tight harmonies, complex thumpin bass rifts and complexity of his rhythms are nothing short of amazing. Favorite songs on this CD: Bittersweet and Whoever.
Amazingly gift July 16, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lewis Taylor is really an amazing "white guy." I thoroughly enjoy his arrangement of sounds and vocals. His lyrical content is what's missing from a lot of our current talent options on heavy rotation radio. I highly recommend this album for anyone looking for a sound ride.
A Decade Later--A Masterpiece by All Standards June 12, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the first time I have been moved to comment on a product sold on Amazon, let alone a piece of music. I listened to this album for the first time last week: it is hands down the best record I've heard in the past several years, and I live with a fanatical record collector so there's no lack of good music in the house.
Simply put, this album is a masterpiece in every sense: artistic unity, formal virtuosity, universality (the human condition thing). First, to settle the formal question: this is a soul album. Too much has been made of it being "difficult to define" and "ecclectic," rather than giving the artist credit for choosing the perfect genre to traverse the fragile line between love, obsession, and the darker side of sexuality (which here is also the lighter side once you embrace it). It chronicles the discovery of sex as a consuming, disturbing, elevating power; the experience of being wrapped around someone's finger; and the subsequent realization of one's less flattering qualities--jealousy, vindictiveness, desperation. If you're happily past the tumultuous twenties, this album brings you back to the good/bad old days; if you're in the thick, it holds up the looking glass. In a word, this is lyric poetry at its finest.
From what I can tell, "influence criticism" primarily shows how knowledgeable the reviewer is, and can create false expectations. Suffice it to say that LT has a massive record collection and exquisite taste, both of which shine through and lend to personal discoveries upon multiple listenings. I've been listening to this album obsessively for a week and hear it even when it's off, which seems only right. I'm in love with this record.
