4 out of 5 stars Intro to Brasilian music   August 8, 2003
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

For anyone who thought that Brasilian music began and ended with 'Wave', here's a good starter set of Brasilian classics: Doce de Coco, Carinhoso, 1x0, Brasileirinho and many other choro standards which most of us gringos never heard, from some of Brasil's greatest musicians/composers - Pixinguinha, Jaco do Bandolim, Waldir Azevedo; plus Gismonti, Assad, and others. Don't let the sweetness of the music fool you; it's as tonally sophisticated as music which sounds much grittier. Yo Yo Ma ain't no Jacques Morelbaum but he treats this seemingly delicate music with affection and respect.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD this Summer   August 8, 2003

This is my first Yo-Yo Ma CD - I've heard his name so many times, but knowing nothing about "Classical" music I never made it to buying a CD. I saw this one being advertised and then I heard him on the radio - it just looks/sounded like it was worth the risk. All I can say is, if you are looking to take the plunge into a different musical space, this is the CD you should do it with! This is rhymthic, enjoyable music that sets a cool vibe. If more classical musicians were adventurous enough to make records like this it would be a great thing for music in general. Thanks Yo-Yo!

Two classical gurus told me that they were not a fan of this particular CD. They even said that the genre is a classical. I dissent; I actually enjoy listening to this CD and believe it is not entirely classical music. Yo-Yo Ma fuses his classical training with Brazilian style jazz that is easy for listeners who are not astute to classical music and/or jazz. Thus, it is the perfect CD for people who are starting out with classical and/or jazz music. For advanced listeners, it is relaxing, mellow, and playful, simultaneously. Every phrase is well developed with warmth and care. It is also a nice change of (music) palette. Usually, whenever Yo-Yo Ma endeavours into a new genre, he encompasses himself with the genre's most prominent musicians. Listen to the CD and purchase it. It speaks for itself. Enjoy!
