Every song is incredible. Fugazi remain one of the best bands ever.
Unstructured, uninspiring concept pieces February 29, 2000 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
OK, let me set this straight... I am a BIG Fugazi fan. Been so since I heard a live tape of theirs in 1988.But I gotta say that this is a painfully bad release. The songs are repetitive, atonal, unstructured, and sloppy pieces. There is no apparent musicianship or any content that's particularly edgy or adventurous (unless you're intrigued by what Guy can come up with in his bedroom with a couple of instruments and obviously too much time on his hands. UGH!). Just really bad experimental music jams that should never left the demo tapes. (Just check out the sound samples and you'll see.) The only song on the entire CD with any chutzpah or character is the understated "I'm So Tired," where Ian sounds lays his soul onto the table in a way that he hsan't in years. Please note that I have never seen the video, so maybe there's a whole context issue that I'm missing. But as a stand-alone release, I feel cheated that a band of such high ideas would release such a poorly-conceived, low-quality effort.
Fugazi never disappoints December 17, 1999 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
After seeing Fugazi live on December 7th in Charlottesville, I was reborn. I feel like I've rediscovered them. I bought the video "Instrument" in order to relive their live shows, but enjoyed the soundtrack to it as well. It can stand alone or beside anything else they have done. The band is truly independent of the mainstream. Do-it-yourself, anti-consumerist...they aren't looking to be famous or start a trend to cash in on. So rare. They are a band looking to connect with their audience, not just make money off of them. Though I've been a fan for a while. It wasn't until just recently I "got" what they are saying. I feel they have helped me to become aware of America, & how I could change it.
Great examination of a great band December 16, 1999 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I think that 'Instrument' is a great examination of the musical path that Fugazi has taken since they first formed 10-15 years ago. Not only does it have interesting, different versions of songs on albums of theirs like "Arpeggiator" (congrats Brendan! ) and "Rend It" (better than the version on "In On the Killtaker), this album also shows that the four have other musical talent, as shown by the swopping of instruments that they did on several tracks, and Ian McKaye's gentle, soothing voice (yes, you read correctly) and piano playing on the wonderful "I'm so Tired."Anyways there is really no point in reviewing a Fugazi album other than that if you do not have this one, or others of theirs, your cd/album collection is not complete.
its just a blueprint December 7, 1999 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Fugazi is one of those great bands that always seems to be searching for the fresh sound. Although this album was made over the last decade, fugazi has managed to be anything but stale on all 18 tracks. there are some excelent two minute grooves on this album that will surely have you hitting the repeater button on your CD player. Just a little FYI... Fugazi will be playing ATL on Dec 17th and Athens at the 40 watt on sat. Dec 18th. So, pack it up and make the show if youre somewhere within 5-6 hrs drive. What have you got better to do? Get off the computer.
