on accident August 12, 1999 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
so, once upon a time i knew a boy and he made a mix tape for me. He didn't believe in listing titles to songs and there was this breathtaking fugazi song on the tape. i have been on a mad search for its father album since then. "on accident" i happened to pick this album up last week and i took it home to see if it might be there (i didn't know this was a recent release)and i was pleasantly supprised. The instramental music that they do i feel is underappreciated and is just consistant in the quality. At the moment i still haven't found the song that i am searching for, but i have really enjoyed my little journey into the world of their music. i sound silly. So, what i am saying is that for a fugazi fan this is a key in the archive and for a browser into the world of Dischord this would make a gooD purchase.
Behind The Scenes With Fugazi July 22, 1999 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Well, I know I've been curious. I've wanted to look behind the Fugazi curtain to hear and see what goes on when the band writes, tours and records. Fugazi's new Instrument video and soundtrack CD provide an all-access pass to the inner workings of one of today's premier bands. I ordered both from Dischord and watched the video (A few times, I'm not ashamed to admit) before listening to the soundtrack CD, and I think that's the way to do it. The documentary, shot nonstop by Jem Cohen on tours, in the studio and at rehearsals, shows the members of Fugazi doing what they do best: making music and going to all of the places it takes them. There are several laugh out loud parts -- a well-meaning fan who incorrectly recalls Ian's days in Black Flag, while mispronouncing his name, Guy plotting the death of a Hollywood legend, Joe's futile attempt to tell everyone about his Iggy Pop dream, Brendan rigging a motel showerhead with Dial soap, a slick MuchMusic correspondent who enthusiastically mangles their lyrics...It's a feel-good flicka that leaves me wishing that Guy had a dance studio I could sign up for. The Instrument soundtrack includes demos of songs that haven't evolved into regular album tracks & raw working 'drafts' of now-familiar songs, some of which are included in the documentary's music bed. A dream come true for any Fugazi fan.
The Best Album You'll Hear All Year! May 24, 1999 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
In a word, simply amazing...This LP showcase's Fugazi's instrumental prowess from the hard core punk on their earlier records like "Repeater" to the more experimental stuff on "In On The Kill Taker", they are the last band left that have stayed true to themselves from the beginning..I suggest people should also check out the video documentary of "Instrument" if you want to hear the exclusive live performances which should have been also included on the soundtrack.
great if you like them a lot May 20, 1999 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
if youre really into fugazi youll want this. if you havent heard much and youre looking for an album to start with this *wouldnt* be it, though. although ians "i'm so tired" is one of the neatest things ive heard in a while.
Showcases Fugazi's instrumental prowess! May 12, 1999 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This (mostly) instrumental release really showcases Fugazi's music (which, in my opinion, has always been Fugazi's real strength). This is highly recommended for fans of bands like Slint and Sonic Youth. Despite one absolutely awful throwaway tune (in which Fugazi unsuccessfully attempts to show the world that they have a sense of humor), Instrument is a welcome addition to Fugazi's catalog (especially if you're a fan but have grown a little tired of the often too-PC, too-abstract lyrics of other titles).
