SMOKIN'! - in every sense of the word December 2, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This album rocks at full speed and it don't take (...) from no one. Unida is fronted by John Garcia of Kyuss so i thought they would have a pretty similar sound. Well, i was fooled - not a bad thing! The fuzzy stoner sound is bassically non-existant on this album as is the trademark Kyuss supa-bass. What is here is firery blues-based hard rock. The musicians are all competent and Garcia puts his heart into every line - he can really wail at times. They only slow down for the last track, which is a lengthy jam with a few lyrics thrown in for good measure. My favorite track is "If Only Two", but all the songs are really good.
oh, man, this is really, really good! January 4, 2001 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
as most of you may know, the singer for Unida is John Garcia, aka the vocalist from the now defunct Kyuss. that was enough to get me to purchase this baby. i was a bit worried when it only listed 8 songs on the back, but it runs about 35 minutes, which is fine by me. this is about the average length of the crap i get now. anyways this is what they call 'stoner', 'desert', 'garage', 'post-grunge', or whatever the heck you want. essentially this means that it has some guitars that blow the life out of your speakers and there's no NOFX style drumming. so what do you get? well, i gotta say it's pretty d@mn good. all the songs get into a groove, and you just love to sing along though you don't know the words. Garcia's vocals are great, as is expected. he's got a real cool sound to him, like he's kickin back, havin a beer, and, oh yeah, writing some great music. there are nice solos, but the selling points are the groove and the vocals. this isn't screamin' vocals either.....it's like someone got ronnie van zant drunk and then he rocked or something. if you're looking for rock and roll with a lot more sound, than this is for you. highly recommended. dare i even say it? could it be better than kyuss? hmmm.....

John Garcia has created a sound with Kyuss, then changed it to more punky stoner rock with his new project Unida. There are the same fuzzy grooves kept from Kyuss, but there are also new, more intelligent jams with this new set. The guitars, drums, and bass are all tuned perfectly, and I love every song. This is perfect daytime stoner rock, for cruising in the van, whereas most of the music in that genre is based around sunset in the desert. Coming on strong with a great title, Coping With the Urban Coyote satisfies easily. Some really cool tracks on here are "Black Woman", "You Wish", "If Only Two", and "Plastic". Check it out if you like Sabbath or Kyuss.
You Need A-This. May 21, 2000 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you listen to this and QOTSA at the same time, it's almost like old times. The album is rough, edgy, filled with rampant guitar and gruff vocals. John Garcia has not died, nor will his sound ever die. I just wish I could get Slo Burn. Such is life.
