First let me say that Ibrahim's voice is beautiful. his voice reminds me of a bird's - it's gentle, silky, never contrived, and has a quiet underlying gusto and base unlike any other singer I've heard. That said, let me also say that this recording has a few super musical moments where that cuban sound - perfect in it's raw simplistic harmonic dissonance - really gets moving. "Mami Me Gusto" is completely out of control. The percussion is so incredible. As for Ry Cooder's production, I have to say that I'm glad I don't listen to music that closely.
Is there a way to excise the inappropriate slide guitar? January 9, 2003 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
An excellent collection of boleros and other Cuban favorites is marred by the absolutely inappropriate guitar playing of Ry Cooder. He has performed a great service by introducing North America to these fine musicians, but unfortunately could not put aside his own ego or lack of musicianship.
Drowned out September 27, 2002 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
If you saw the film and expected to actually be able to enjoy this recording, think again. The simplicity of the first recordings and the film, not to mention the wonderful voice of Ibrahim Ferrer are overwhelmed by inappropriate orchestration filled with schmaltzy violins and brass which drowns out the vocal music. Gone are the campesino musicians and their instruments. Enter Hugo Winterhalter. These arrangements obliterate every smidgen of charm and, against the odds, manage to make what is vibrant sound old and dated. It's a shame that so much intimacy and beauty was lost by expanding to a cast of thousands. Ibrahim deserves better. So do we.
Songs of Freedom, longing, bawdiness, and fun June 15, 2002 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I agree that the guitar work here is inappropriate. But the spirit of Cuban Ibrahim Ferrer shines through and this set definitely brings forth a joyful sound. The best songs, in my opinion, are at the front, but they are all good in their own rights. Joy of freedom is expressed in the first number, "Bruca Manigua", and then contrasted with the longing sound and lyrics of the bolero, "Herido de Sombras". Then there's "Marieta" with its sly bawdiness, and a song of innocent partying, "Guateque Campesino". All in all, a good introduction or a good addition to your existing Cuban collection.
Muy Caliente March 13, 2002 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is for anyone who is open to GOOD music. This guy will move your soul and make you want more. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who isn't afraid to take a chance on a musical journey through the heart and rhythm of a forgotten culture.
