So much, so good, so well put together January 17, 2000 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Adams has a great diversity to his projects. He works with great collaborators and gets amazing results. These are first class performances, beautifully packaged, the liner notes are accessible and insightful and the music is fascinating, hypnotic, funny, gorgeous, and surprising by turns. A lot to digest.
Excellent compilation from a significant composer October 25, 1999 47 out of 53 found this review helpful
This is an extensive compilation of the primary works of the last 25 years from one of America's most important and best-loved living composers, John Adams. Represented here are a variety of works from the Grawemeyer-award winning "Violin Concerto" to excerpts from his two operas. Adams is generally unfortunately classified as a "minimalist." While it is true that a few of the earliest works (e.g., "Common Tones in Simple Time" and "Shaker Loops") are examples of a rather "pure minimalist" style, Adams quickly moved beyond the extremely confining and boring form of minimalism to develop a distinctly identifiable style that bustles with rhythmic intensity and excitement and a distinct lyrical vein. This is significant music and Adams creates his own form of truly "American" music without some of the self-conscious gestures of composers like Copland or Harris. This is earnest music with a contagious excitement that has proved to be appealing to audiences of all kinds throughout the world.
