5 out of 5 stars This is very, very heavy music   April 28, 2001

This soundtrack is not upbeat or happy to say the least, though at times it is incredibly beautiful. Some of the pieces are very sinister and intense("Fear","Meltdown","Sara Goldfarb has left the building").Others are delicate and sad("Summer Overture","Ghosts of things to come").Variations of the same melodies come and go,but I never found it less than riveting. My only critism would be the two conga pieces that seem out of place, but which gives the listener a little breather from the heaviness.I have yet to see the movie, but my good friend Laura and I are counting the days until the May 22 video release.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Wonderful   April 16, 2001

I don't know how powerful the music will be if you have never seen the film, but if you have, the album is almost like reliving the film. The string music is grating, mesmerizing, soothing, and shocking all at once.

5 out of 5 stars A must-listen.. or something...   April 10, 2001

If you've seen the movie, you understand why this soundtrack is so moving. If you haven't, the music may seem a little melodramatic or repetitive. Personally, having seen the movie, every song has a jarring memory from the very, VERY disturbing movie. Even just the music evokes such emotion. I think the music is beautiful regardless, but if you really like the soundtrack, see the movie.. it will mean so much more. Kronos Quartet does an amazing job with this haunting music. A must-see-must-buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars haunting and beautiful   April 10, 2001
I haven't even seen the movie yet, but after listening to the soundtrack, I know I have to. Mansell brings in the masters of the strings, Kronos Quartet (if you haven't seen them live yet.. DO SO), and creates a recording that will not leave your CD player for weeks (it's still in mine... I don't see it going anywhere soon). The almost shrill Kronos Quartet numbers remind me a bit of their early "Black Angels" (another amazing CD) which established their place in my "must have this CD" mentality. You will not regret purchasing this CD. Listen to it a few times before you make up your mind. It will stay with you... you will find yourself coming back to it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely incredible.   March 26, 2001

This recording is so haunting that it drills into your dreams, and the movie is even better. I went to see it with some friends, and four out of the five us fainted at the very end. One of my friends quotes, "It was the f***ing music that did it." And I agree, wholeheartedly. It's the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful thing you'll ever listen to. I believe that the first three seconds of "Cleaning Apartment" is probably the most jarring sound I've ever heard, and thrillingly addictive in it's simplistic horror. You won't be sorry if you buy this record or see the movie, but if you do the latter, beware your wits. It tends to hit home very closely.
