5 out of 5 stars F*** yeah   March 26, 2005

i recently watched this movie and thought it was awesome. My friends favorite movie of ALL time is Fight Club. he's watched at least 20 times. Well at the moment I am thinking that this is my movie of ALL time.(i havent had one yet) The soundtrack has an awesome techno-like symphonic mood to it and was absolutley fantastic in the film. I(obviously) recommend you pick this one up if you liked the movie and liked the music in it.

4 out of 5 stars C. F. Burton is right   November 5, 2004

C. F. Burton is right. I'm giving it a higher rating than he does because of the quality of performance. The Kronos Quarter indeed does a brilliant job, and the music is full and stirring. However, just as the listener starts really getting into a track, it quits and the next one begins. It's like a series of 33 frustrations.

5 out of 5 stars A driving force throughout the film   October 22, 2004

Requiem for a Dream is the most powerful film I've ever seen. And while the acting, and the direction were marvelous, the music was key in creating the film's dark, brooding, and hopelessly depressing atmosphere. By far the highlight of the entire score was the gorgeous theme music. Performed on strings, the music helps drown out whatever hopes you may consider having thorughout the movie. I cannot stress enough- see the film and then you MUST go out and get this soundtrack. Even without the film accompanying it, music this gorgeous, this moody, and gut-wrenchingly sad provides that same feeling without a movie to go along with. A MUST-HAVE.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment   September 27, 2004

Well, I suppose this isn't the only film soundtrack to have disappointed me, but it is the only one to have disappointed me this much. Before I go any further - if you haven't seen the film (which I highly recommend you do) don't bother with this. Really, don't.

Essentially, much of what you find here could have been really good, but rather than taking the time to make the music into some decent, epic lengthy songs or constructing the music in a way that is genuinely listenable, the music is simply put on the CD as it occured on the film. The result is a choppy album that rarely manages to maintain a dark or intense mood because of the constant changes. A cool upbeat riff for a minute, a quiet atmospheric track for a minute (literally). Only 9 of these 33 songs are above 2 minutes (and only one hits the 4 minute mark) while 11 are under a minute. Far too many of these tracks could have worked well as moody introductions to something longer, but are useless by themselves. Also, there are musical themes that repeat themselves during the film, and hence on here too, which in my mind makes an even stronger case for making separate tracks for separate themes (rather than simply running through the film), and all the more frustrating that they're not.

To be fair, the longer tracks (which are still too short to get lost in) are decent and very listenable. Nonetheless though, its still frustrating to hear all this potentially wondorful music squandered by this lazy attempt at cashing in on the film when it could have been much more.

5 out of 5 stars Great & powerful sndtrk. Trent is lord over all instruments.   August 24, 2004

I highly reccomend giving this a listen, just for the simple fact that Trent Reznor (NIN frontman) helped create alot of the mood and sound of this soundtrack.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/fullcredits

He's listed under "Special Thanks" in IMDB's listing of Reqium For a Dream so that means he has to have been involved, and you know how Trent is.. if he "helps" something he usually takes it by the balls and does whatever he wants with it.

I like alot of Trent's instrumental works, like the melodic soundscapes that can be found on the additional disc of And All That Could've Been. Who'd have thought that Trent Reznor could make classical music sound interesting? I hope Trent continues to build scores for movies, he does a great job of conveying emotion.
