the movie is awsome and a true one for someone who has witnessed the negitive efects of drugs. but the sound track is awsome because when yo uare in an altered state of mind its the trippiest thing in the world. but enough about me se yeah later.
Good score September 21, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This soundtrack has great expressive capability, due to the ability of the Kronos Quartet. Although somewhat of a Philip Glass rip off, Mansell deserves attention for his effective application of minimalist styles in his compositions. Overall, this is a solid, worthy score.
Enjoyable August 17, 2003 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I give it a generous 4 stars because yes, I DO like this music very much. However, they left out arguably the MOST IMPORTANT piece...the "warm up" of Kronos Quartet that can be heard in the beginning of the movie when Harry goes home to take his mom's television. They later play that when Ty meets Brody. It's totally integral to the movie. Without it, the CD is not a true reflection of what the movie represents. At least, that's the way I see it. In addition, I think the music in the film is more enjoyable than simply hearing it on CD without the visuals. However, this CD does not contain any more music than you hear in the film. This is not the CD to Gattaca, where there are full orchestrations. Requiem for a Dream CD contains "snippets" as short as those you hear in the film. Enjoyable, although a bit lacking unfortunately.
high music July 10, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
While a i was watching the movie i thought "i gotta buy this soundtrack" and i did. The music in the CD appears just like in the movie and that's the problem, you won't find a full track in this cd, there are 30 songs that can be 3 in time. That's why i gave it 4 stars instead 5. But, if you liked the movie you can take it. Anyway, it's a great cd, the songs are truly intense and the strings arrengements are spectacular. You won't regret it.
This Isn't Your Mother's Dinner Music May 7, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Musically, the C.D. is an artistic and poignant merging of quality classical and electronica music. The Kronos String Quartet is known for both its fecundity and contemporary experimental style(s). Their dedication to experimentation is a excellent match for D.J., Clint Mansell's cerebral approach to electronica. The chaotic and twitchy moodiness of the score works best while viewing the film and does lack something when taken independently. The music follows with erratic immediacy the highs and lows involved in the drug addictions of the film's characters. I remember my first viewing of the film at the theater as completely absorbing. I emerged from the theater in a post-Dionysian stupor. After watching the film later on DVD, I realized that the narrative intensity of the actual story was often carried by the emotive strength of the soundtrack. Without any reference to the narrative of the film, the frequent swapping of blissful interludes (which decrease in occurrence as the soundtrack progresses) with the prevailing disturbing musical theme would seem a little arbitrary as well as too stark for passive listening. It is this minor flaw that cost my rating the fifth star. However, the sheer power of the pathos conveyed by the music warrant its purchase.
