See the movie first then you'll realize how great this is April 21, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
One thing in the movie that caught my attention besides the acting was the soundtrack. This thing truely captures the emotion and sadness of the film. If your familiar with Nine Inch Nails material, i'd say most of these songs are reminscent of The Fragile instrumentals. Although there are only 4 main music sections and they get repititive in your mind you can actually picture the scene that is occuring at the moment. I might be a little ashamed to say this and i might be editing this review very soon, but just hearing the opening "Summer Overture" i literally balled my eyes out crying just remembering the pain and torture that the characters went to.

How can you refuse a CD with a track entitled "Marion Barfs?"Those who have seen and are familiar with the film will find the music a powerful reminder of the anguish of the film. People say that many tracks sound exactly alike, but their subtle differences and the nature of the scenes they accompany in the film provide very different listening experiences. For example, the SUMMER OVERTURE and LUX AETERNA sound similar, but their slight teaks in orchestration and the drasticly different atmosphere at the film in that point in time make the experiences very different. Brilliant, sad, anguished, and haunting, this music has the same inpact of the film, which isnt what most people consider their cup of tea

The movie is amazing, and if you haven't seen it, this album probably won't mean as much to you. That put aside, this is a great album. Each track reminds you of a particuliar scene from the film, and while it gets a bit repetitive (There are basically 4 or so main melodies, mixed differently), it's still a good CD.
  Definitely Interesting . . . February 7, 2003 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I saw the movie itself about a month ago and, though I think I liked it (still not quite sure), the music was what really struck me. It's haunting- especially the theme that keeps popping up. A weird mix of the brilliant Kronos Quartet and what sounds like computer generated sound effects. I use it a lot for background music because, besides the theme, there's hardly anything solid to hang on to or hum. I recently had to write a lengthy essay on a poem by Sylvia Plath and engrossed myself in this soundtrack for three straight days because it is probably the most depressing sounding music that I have. Anyway, I think the paper turned out well . . . All in all, definitely interesting. Like the movie, it leaves a haunting after-taste.
Absolutly mesmorising but could be improved January 28, 2003 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
What a film, straight after watching it I had to get the soundtrack. It came in a slipcase and the track names where covered. When i got it home and opened it up, i was shocked at seeing 30+ tracks. They ranged from 20 seconds to 4 minutes but the average is probably 1 min 10sec's per track which is deeply disapointing. What the lazy buggers have done is to just copy and paste tracks, exactly how they where in the film, same length and all. This means that just as you're getting into a track, it ends which is massivly frustrating. Luckily tracks 27-32 follow on from each other giving you an epic 17minute track to enjoy. All in all, after searching there are about 5 decent length tracks to enjoy, and because the quality of music is so good i have no choice but to give it 4 stars. Its a shame that they couldn't create a few proper tracks. Those who haven't watched the film can expect deeply moving string based classical music but with the addition of fused bigbeat/ driving chamber music to give it that dark atmosphere and extra edge. Its basically a string version of Clint Mansells excellent Pi score. That definatly needs to be checked out as does the film. You however might not fully understand the emotiveness of the tracks if you haven't watched the film. When i listen to the score, i instinctivly remeber the certain emotional parts of the film and it leaves me disjointed. Those looking to follow up the Kronos Quartet in order to find similar stuff shouldn't waste their time. I have heard some of Kronos's interpretations of classical music and although great, its a world apart from this score because it is straight classical devoid of any soundscape or techno trappings. I however do recommend you should at least try out the remixed version of this soundtrack if you are fond of more dance based versions of this score.
