3 out of 5 stars Approach cautiously.   September 1, 2001

I utterly agree with the editorial review: these performances are dark and often far too slow. I bought the LPs in 1980 after growing up with the 1962 Karajan set. Klemperer is better recorded than Karajan, but that's the only virtue. The Philharmonia Orchestra plays superbly, but, oh my goodness, Klemperer ruins things with his impossibly slow tempos. The first movement of the Eroica is marked allegro con brio - fast, with spirit, and this is the greatest movement Beethoven wrote in the whole cycle of the symphonies. But Klemperer bars me from enjoying it because in his hands it is slow, dark and cold. Karajan makes it catch fire. Beethoven's opening movements just do not work unless played at the correct speed. The only things I think Klemperer does better than anyone else are the opening movements of the 6th and 9th. The 5th and 7th symphonies are appalling. For everything else go to the 1962 Karajan, which has the best 3rd, 4th, 8th and 9th ever recorded. No self respecting Beethoven collector should be without them.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have Beethoven Collection   January 2, 2001

This collection is a must have. Each symphony is performed with perfect skill and emotion such that I could listen to this collection 100 times and not tire of it. Each of the 9 symphonys and 5 piano concertos come with their history and storry. This is the easiest and, I think, the best wat to collect the music that made Beethoven one of the most famous amd celebrated composers of all time.
