5 out of 5 stars How could one not love this?   December 8, 2006

I first checked out the 2003 TV version of The Music Man DVD at the public library. I fell in love with it with all my heart. I checked it out often. Finally, I purchased it. After reading reviews that the Robert & Shirley 1962 version was so much better, I thought I might go ahead and see it, having never done so before. What are you all talking about? Robert looks like a creepy old man (I was shocked to learn that he was only 42). And, Shirley tanks those songs with that really bad voice. How could anyone perfer it? The Matthew and Kristen version is just light hearted, fun entertainment. How good does something have to be anyway. Get over yourselves and lighten up. If you have any fears about spending money on it, go see if it is at your library. Check it out. I betcha you'll love it. I really love the barbershop quartet stuff. Really great. And, they seem to be having such a good time.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing   October 21, 2006

I am a big fan of both Broderick and Chenoweth, but the movie and the soundtrack do not work for me because Matthew is the wrong person to play Harold Hill. He just does not come across as the loveable rogue. I also agree with the reviewer who commented that there was not enough emotion. With regard to this album, the music is "rushed" -- if you listen, it appears the movie or music director is forcing the pace, perhaps because of the time constraints of television.

3 out of 5 stars chenoweth oldest marion on record   August 30, 2006

i must take exception to the comments of chenoweth and broderick being too young for their roles. Barbara cook was 31 on broadway and shirley jones 28 when she made the film . Kristin was the ripe old age of 35.. so not having life experiences seems invalid. robert preston 38 broadway, 42 film ...broderick 41 not a huge difference. anyway kristi sounded lovely as always matthew a different approach but let the age thing go...

4 out of 5 stars who are they kidding?? Matthew Broderick can't sing!   June 3, 2006

I think the casting in this version of the film is a little disturbing. I'm not quite sure why they chose Matthew Broderick to play the part of the music man. He does bring a very nice charm to the character, but considering the movie is all about music, ...SHOULDN'T THE MAIN CHARACTER AT LEAST KNOW HOW TO SING??? Ok, so he does sing, but it's no where near as good as Robert Preston's performance in the first version of this film.

I saw the version with Shirley Jones and Robert Preston, and I fell in love with it. I loved Shirley Jones' singing, and Robert Preston's as well. When my mom bought this version, I was hesitant, and it turned out I had all the reason to be.
Honestly, I'm not trying to offend the story or anything, I personally love it, but Matthew Broderick isn't a singer, and whoever played Marion, well, her voice just doesn't fit the character.

If you want to see the Music Man, I would suggest the version with Shirley Jones and Robert Preston. Much better music. However, if you just want to see Matthew Broderick acting, then by all means, go ahead and get it, he is an excellent actor, ...just not a singer!

I'm giving it four out of five stars for effort. It could have been great with two different main actors...
