a sad sad attempt August 4, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
After seeing this on TV, I was appalled. I don't believe I even watched the entire thing. I am a long-time fan of The Music Man, and the director, screenwriters, costume designer and several cast members missed the boat on this version. Of course, Kristen sings beautifully, and she acted the role pretty well, too, but that could not save the production as a whole. It was miserable. Matthew Broderick (who I like a lot) especially disappointed me in this. He did not have the charm or the cunning of Professor Harold Hill (surprisingly, the qualities he portrayed so well in Ferris Beuller). Molly Shannon, who I would have thought would make a perfect Eulalie Shinn, camped it up with schtick and no acting whatsoever. And directorally the entire movie was a mess. I don't know what he thought he was doing when he added a fantasy princess dream-sequence into "Mariam the Librarian," but it was wrong and dreadfully cheesy. If you want a good recording of The Music Man, buy the original. If you want to see a good production of The Music Man, buy the movie with Robert preston. The one star that this recording gets goes to Kristen Chenoweth.
KRISTIN CHENOWETH ONLY GOOD PART OF THE CD July 5, 2004 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I own all 3 Music Man CD's and this cd is by far the worst album I own. KRISTIN CHENOWETH IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING..... her co-star Matthew B. sucks completely he have no enthusiasm and is a very dull and boring Harold Hill.... Molly Shannon and the pick a little ladies are boring as well .. all and all this is a very very very disapointing CD... IF UR A KRISTIN CHENOWETH FAN THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE if not ITS NOT WORTH UR MONEY
Kristin Chenoweth Shines, the rest is lack-luster July 5, 2004 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Disney, the studio I grew up with which used to produce wonderful entertainment, has been slipping slowly downward over the years, producing poor quality with only the name Disney to get by. This Music Man is no exception. Kristin Chenoweth, as always, is brilliant! But she sticks out like a sore thumb when up against the likes of Broderick's ho-hum Harold Hill who, by means of the song Trouble is supposed to convince the townfolk that something's amiss in River City. Unfortunately what's amiss is Hill himself. He is no salesman and after this particular redition of Trouble given by Broderick the townsfolk ought to have run him out of town and end the show right then and there. All thumbs down for this one!
A Wonderful Music Man CD March 27, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This CD is great! Matthew Brodreick is not perfect, but he is good. Kristen Chenoweth is the *STAR*. She does great, especially in Till there was You. She sounds mystical. Marcellus is a bit to... gleeful in Shipoopi. On some songs they reworked the instrumentation alot... a little bit to much. The worst was Iowa Stubborn. Another bad one is Wells Fargo Wagon, though the singers were at there best on that one. What ever happened to the clopping horse feet? Overerall this is 4 stars.

I have always enjoyed The Music Man. I saw this DVD displayed at the local Kmart. I never even realized that The Music Man was remade. The most outstanding thing in this remake was Kristin Chenoweth; she has an amazing voice and a prescence that is to be rivaled.Mathew Broderick is in a class of his own, and although my peers would agree that the part of Prof. Harold Hill was made for Robert Preston, Mathew Broderick gave the character a new and refreshing interpretation.
