Oh yes we have trouble. March 21, 2003 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
Oh yes we have trouble, right here in The Music Man. The only one worth watching in this awful version of The Music Man is Kristin Chenoweth. Her voice and personality came thru with flying colors. Matthew Broderick was just plain boring. I have seen High School productions that were better. Another Disney flop!
BEST YET March 21, 2003 thoroughly enjoyable in a sad way. inspired me to get and play and read about JOHN PHILIP SOUSA , gilmore ,etc. plenty of electricity. i like especially "there is nothing halfway...."
One extra star for Kristin Chenoweth March 21, 2003 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I feel compelled to respond to a previous reviewer who called this a "Disney soundtrack." I beg to differ; this is a classic Broadway score that has been appropriated, scrubbed, and mangled by Disney. There was no reason for the remake and certainly no reason for this CD to exist. Matthew Broderick was an unmitigated disaster as Harold Hill, probably crammed into the role only because Disney had him on contract and he'd appeared (in more appropriate roles) in the musical theatre before. Hill is supposed to be a salesman of immense personal charisma, energy, and persuasiveness; Broderick simply doesn't have those characteristics. He can't live up to Craig Bierko, much less Robert Preston (whose performance was one of the great star turns of Broadway history). Chenoweth, on the other hand, made a remarkably good Marion and is almost the only person worth listening to on this disc. Unless you fell in love with her, forget this piece of junk and get the original movie soundtrack or the original cast album.

Don't waste your money. Matthew Broderick was phenominal in the Producers, but he is no Professor Hill.Go get the Producers CD and the original Broadway or film cast CDs for the Music Man, and you will be much happier.
MEREDITH WILSON MUST BE TURNING IN HIS GRAVE March 15, 2003 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
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
