Great Bossa Nova October 23, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yo Yo Ma captures the bossa nova spirit well. It reminds me of Tom Jobim. My favorite song has to be Chega da Saudade. The songs with lyrics are the best. The beauty of the portuguese language mixed with Ma's tunes is excellent.
artful music or easy listening October 21, 2003 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
While I like many songs in this CD, there are an equally large number of songs that are close to easy-listening music. It is no longer new from Mr. Ma to use his masterful skills to bring a new sound into music other than classic music. This CD is good, but you do not have to buy it.
Superb, enchanting music October 14, 2003 The review says it all. Truly mesmerising music. I would strongly recommend this CD to put you in a relaxed and happy mood!
Such Passion, Such Pleasure September 27, 2003 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Yo Yo Ma's continuing exploration of different music has reached a zenith with this Brazilian effort. His performance has never been more direct and pure; you'd swear he was raised on Copacabana Beach. His song selection is superlative. The lifestyle passion of South America, and Brazil especially, is so free and open and reflected in the way music permeates its entire culture. Mr. Ma obviously enjoyed himself with this recording. And so will listeners. Personally, I hear a Grammy nomination with this. . .
A great overview of the Brazilian spirit September 26, 2003 54 out of 57 found this review helpful
I was blessed to spend almost 2 years in the beautiful country of Brazil. I learned the language and loved the people. I'm a musician myself and have been recently discovering the beautiful sounds of Heitor Villa-Lobos. This CD has 2 of his pieces as well as a fantastic selection, ranging from the smooth jazz of A. Jobim to the more traditionals sounds of Paxinguinha with the samba. There's nothing like jazz sung by a native of Rio and there's nothing so wonderful as the samba. I admire the selection of music on this CD as it covers a wide variety of genres and a large chunk of Brazilian history. Several of the newer pieces were also quite enjoyable, especially because they were performed by the composers themselves. Of course, Yo-Yo Ma outdoes himself again. His playing is impeccable as is his ability to become part of the larger ensemble. I'm so glad he's willing to blend in and let us hear all the different and beautiful aspects of this music. He's truly a class act as well as an astonishingly accurate and polished musician!
