5 out of 5 stars Indispensible   July 13, 2006

These are the grooves every drummer needs to become a well-rounded musician. Tommy Igoe is an excellent teacher and clearly explains every pattern. The DVD includes the famous wall poster, Groove Essentials, from which this program is derived. Some of the grooves are pretty basic and won't take long to master, but others are extremely advanced and will take much practice to perfect. The DVD is thoughtfully organized so finding what you want to practice is a snap. If you are a beginning drummer, I highly recommend starting with Tommy Igoe's "Getting Started on Drums" first.

5 out of 5 stars Learn different styles!   July 10, 2006

Once again, Tommy Igoe scores an ace with Groove Essentials. A great teacher exposes you to different drumming styles and demonstates them slow then faster example. I gained an appreciation for different drumming styles and have found myself listening to different music styles. Thank you Tommy Igoe for another great DVD!

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for all serious students...   April 3, 2006

We're all students, right? I know I'll never stop learning... The title "Groove Essentials" is right on the money! Tommy Igoe presents each groove as a sort of "root" groove to be expanded upon. He does an excellent job explaining how each groove should be played and how it should 'feel'. I've always been interested in Latin rhythms, but could never quite figure them out from reading patterns in books. Tommy gives a short history of each rhythm including the nuances of playing each one... something you can't really get from a printed pattern in a book.
As each groove is played along with the band, Tommy expands on it musically... not just rigidly playing the pattern over and over. This is very helpful... listening to each groove applied in a real musical situation.

Mr. Igoe presents the material in a light and friendly fashion with lots of encouragement to keep trying. No inflated ego or 100 mph drum fills here! Each groove is counted out slowly at first and explained in detail before it is played with the band. This DVD needs to be in every drummer's library and the cool poster of each groove needs to hang on every drummer's wall next to the drumset!

5 out of 5 stars Tommy is a GREAT Teacher.   March 25, 2006

I hadn't played drums since high school - 40 years ago - and I had never assembled them from scratch. When I ordered myself a set last November I also ordered Tommy's "Getting Started on Drums". I was so impressed by the way he took the mystery out of assembling and tuning the drums as well as the starter lessons on the DVD that I decided to get "Grove Essentals" both the book and this DVD. I was not dissapointed. Once again his teaching style is friendly, animated (not a dry lecture) and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Tommy Igoe - Outstanding   January 28, 2006

This DVD is outstanding! While this DVD is intended for beginner and intermediate players, advanced players will find it very useful. I have been playing for over 30 years and found value in the product. Advanced players will find the World Music portion to be the most helpful, while beginners will find this to be the basic dictionary of beats. Tommy is a great player and his enthusiasm and passion scream through. The production quality and sound are top notch and navigation is clear and user friendly. This is an excellent resource for teachers to use with students and should be a part of all teacher's collections. As you spend time with the DVD, you will want to fast foward through the introductions, but other than that, this is a wonderful product. If a beginner was going to by one drumming DVD, (out of the hundreds available today) this is the one to own.
