For Preverbal Babies? March 7, 2006 28 out of 30 found this review helpful
As a counselor for families with young babies, I have had the opportunity to review a number of sign language resources for preverbal babies.
This DVD seems more appropriate for older children rather than preverbal babies who are trying to communicate basic wants and needs. Some of the most important first words and signs for young babies are not offered - eat, drink, milk, more, etc. Instead this DVD offers words and signs such as computer, puzzle, clock, etc.
In addition, there are no babies signing or speaking in this production and it lacks an appropriate tutorial for parents of hearing babies who are teaching their babies to use sign language.
I recommend the My Baby Can Talk series to teach either sign language or first spoken words to babies.
issues of class March 6, 2006 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
I just have to add that, as a sign language interpreter, it's nice to see this addition to the series. However, it would behoove Julie Aigner-Clark to include images of homes other than the upper middle-class/upper-class homes she depicts in this video. Not *all* of us lie in our beautiful, canopied, king-size beds reading to our children in our expensive homes. I wish she had depicted the other homes that exist for countless other children: apartments, lower middle-class homes, etc. -- even a double-wide trailer would be nice to see. *All* we see are the homes of the economically advantaged. I guess one could argue that lower-class families may not be in the position to afford 'Baby Einstein' DVDs/videos, but they may be getting them from the library. And so many children will *not* see their home depicted in a DVD about the very subject.
Educational, but slow-moving March 3, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My son is 15 months old and loves most of the Baby Einstein DVDs that we have. This one doesn't seem to hold his interest as much as some of the others do. It is very educational with sections teaching him new words and how to sign those new words, but this section moves rather slowly and I think he likes the sections with the music and visuals better. His favorites right now are Baby Bach, Neighborhood Animals and Baby Neptune.
One Of My Favorite Baby Einstein DVD's March 1, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is one of my favorite baby einstein video's for the simple fact that it does teach sign language. This one is good for babies and preschoolers. (Also, check out Baby Shakespeare which is another one of my favorite Baby Einstein video's)
