4 out of 5 stars Great new BE video!   August 7, 2005

I bought this for my son's first birthday. He has loved Baby Einstein since he was 5 months old (it's the only show he's allowed to watch at such a young age). He also started learning Baby Signs when he was six months old, so I knew he would love this video. It is true that most of the signs are not ASL, as one reviewer mentioned. However, the writer of that review should probably read more about Baby Signs. The purpose of teaching signs to an infant is to be able to communicate with the child, period. It is not to prepare the child to communicate with the deaf. Baby Signs are meant to be as simple as possible, so that young children can grasp them easily. I do agree with the person who mentioned the two - minute ad for Little Einstein that cannot be skipped. It is a pain to have to sit through it every time my son wants to watch the movie. However, it is an overall wonderful show that both taught my son new signs and kept him entertained.

My kids just love this DVD. The music is typical of BE. I was also able to fast forward/skip through all of the commercials.

So if you love Baby Einstein, this is a definate must have!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing--NOT ASL!   August 4, 2005

I am very disappointed in this video. My 16-month daughter seems to like to like it somewhat, but it doesn't hold her interest like the other Einstein videos, with the exception of the sign language part. I have instructed my daughter in American Sign Language so that is why she is interested. However, do not be mistaken in thinking that this is American Sign Language. Where as some signs are, others ARE NOT AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE. This is very disappointing to me. I want her to learn proper sign language so she will be able to use it in the future if need be. What is the purpose in learning a made up language???? In addition, they only show the sign once before going on to something else. If you really want a good video that teaches sign language to infants/toddlers, I recommend BABY SEE N' SIGN. This is an excellent video and my daughter picks this video out to watch more than any other video she has.

My son just loves the Baby Einstein series -- some of them more than others, but he has NEVER lost interest after only 5 minutes as he did with this one. I have only watched the first 10 minutes of this, so my review cannot possibly be comprehensive. But...well...I thought it was boring too and I'm used to being completely charmed & visually stimulated myself by the BE videos.

Baby Wordsworth starts with an introduction to the objects in your "house" (assuming we all have one that looks like your standard Colonial) and then proceeds to introduce the objectsat (for BE) a rapid-fire pace with no real exploration of their meaning or use. Some kids might like this, but I think my son's reaction was -- like -- "What's with this stuff? This is the same stuff I see every day." Then there's this footage of familes doing "normal" things in their "house." It's like watching a series of glossy, well-produced television commercials ("Shall we go to the refrigerator and get a treat, honey?" "Let's make a cake!"). I'm not a cynic about home-based activities, but feel that, since we pretty much live them (albeit in a far less fabulous kitchen) it takes a little bit more effort to make this sort of thing stimulating in video form.

My advice is don't waste your money. Also, I purchased the VHS and the sound quality is appalling. This video is being returned tomorrow.

1 out of 5 stars Unbearable advertising! Buyer beware   July 31, 2005

I just purchased this DVD for my 13 month old, only to find that there is a 2-minute advertisement for the show Little Einsteins that one must sit through EVERY time Play is pressed. There is NO way to bypass the two minute advertisement using the DVD remote. Why must my baby and I sit through a 2-minute ad, much less one for a show she is too little for, every single time we watch this?! I have already complained to Disney via their website and am considering returning the DVD. (I don't consider myself one to complain but this is infuriating.)

I rated this item only on the basis of the advertising on the DVD, not regarding the content, but please be forewarned.
