Sleep Through the Album February 6, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
Borrrrring
I'd give it 2 and a half, but that's not an option.
Why all the slow songs?
The only songs worth listening to are Angel and Hope and the single's not bad, but this is way below my expectations of following up In Between Dreams. Curious George was a better album
Boring ... February 6, 2008 10 out of 24 found this review helpful
I don't understand. The music on this CD is NOT what made him famous. It's really nothing special. Almost depressing.
Glad I downloaded it before I bought it.
Basically the same Jack February 6, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this album yesterday and so far it has not left my cd player and I've heard the whole album at least 4 or 5 times. If you are expecting another "Brushfire Fairytales" or "In Between Dreams" you may be let down. This album is great but it is just a little different to me than Brushfire or IBD. First off, this album doesn't have as many poppy, instant radio hit type songs. I bought this album after work, took it home and popped it in the cd player. I cranked it up and soon realized this album is much more mellow and chill than past albums. I actually found myself about to pass out because the album was so relaxing and soothing. Heck, I'm listening to it on my computer at work and it's just really peaceful to me in my stressful job. I would recommend this album to anybody period, not just Jack Johnson fans. If you are a JJ fan, give the album a good chance and go in with an open mind.
Must be appreciated in its own light February 6, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
It's hard to listen to this album and not compare it to his others. The big difference is that his previous music was largely natural, flowy, and casual, which is what I love about his music. The songs on this album seem more focussed, like he has a real purpose or impression that he's trying to make. It seems like now that he is a family man, his music is more direct about the things that he loves and the things that he hates. His older protest songs were more vague and general, while the second track, "Sleep Through The Static", is far more direct and obviously anti-Bush.
The album definitely sounds sounds like it was made by a man who spent the last two years settling down with his family, helping his friends produce with their own albums (Matt Costa, Money Mark, ALO, G.Love, Rogue Wave), while writing children's music on the side (Curious George soundtrack).
If you appreciate being in love, taking time away from the craziness of life and spending it with your family, and are worried about what our society is doing to screw up people's priorities, then "Sleep Through The Static" will likely resonate with you. But it has to be appreciated by itself, and not compared to his older albums. I do hope that this is just a phase he's going through, though. :)
Alright if you're in a corny mood February 6, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Just picked up this cd and was disappointed. The lyrics are almost too corny for me too listen too and yes I am a huge J.J fan.
The album lacked good instrumentation on several of the tracks, with various guitar rifts analogous to older songs.
Another reviewer mentioned that "Jack is in love" which is the exact impression this album gave me. If you are not in the mood to hear corny love poem lyrics such as:
"If I had eyes in the back of my head I would have told you that You looked good As I walked away
And if you could've tried to trust the hand that fed You would've never been hungry But you never really be"
or
"She gives me presents with her presence alone"
"She can make angels I've seen it with my own eyes"
on every track, then this album is not for you.
