4 out of 5 stars judging books and covers   April 16, 2008

Well we've all been advised to not judge a book by its cover but here is a prime example. Like many I was interested in the short sound bite for the new apple computer ads but after listening I found more substance than the ad imparted. Her unusual style of changes in mood and instrumentation was a nice ride from tuba to angelic choir and carried the listener farther than most pop tunes. Sure I'm older but also a musician and I admired her mixed sounds that complimented rather than clashed....I downloaded more and listened to more and I think we will see (and hear) more of her to come...I hope.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing   April 14, 2008

I love her catchy song from the MacAir commercial 'New Soul.' But the rest of the CD lacks the same upbeat charm. A few songs are in french, which surprised me but I would have enjoyed if the melodies would have been more memorable. Overall, I wish I just would have downloaded the New Soul song and not bought the whole CD. Not that the songs are bad by any means, just forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Yael Naim   April 7, 2008

Sung in Hebrew, French and English, Yael Naim's self-titled album is an eerily beautiful musical import.

The 13-track disc was originally released in October in France and made its way to the United States earlier this year.

The French/Israeli singer joined forces two years ago with instrumentalist David Donatien to create her second CD. The finished product is mysterious, seductive and delicious.

Naim's breathy vocals combined with demure lyrics and simplistic instrumentals have a soothing effect.

"New Soul," the album's first single, which was featured on Apple's MacBook Air commercial in February, is a pop, jazz-enthused ballad that is instantly catchy:

"I'm a new soul/I came to this strange world/Hoping I could learn a bit about how to give and take/But since I came here/Felt the joy and fear/Finding myself making every possible mistake."

"Far Far" is a delicate song with an inspirational story:

"Far far, there's this little girl/She was praying for something to happen to her/Every day she writes words and more words/Just to speak out the thoughts that keep floating inside."

Naim's cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic" is genius. The fact that this song is placed amongst 12 originals is surprising enough, but what is amazing is Na'm's ability to convert this girl power club song into something brilliant.

Tracks such as "Paris," sung in Hebrew, and "Levater," sung in French, are like modern-day lullabies. "Too Long" brings chills to the spine with a spooky, elegant sound.

From first listen, this album is intoxicating.

5 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful melodies from a wonderful new singer.....   March 29, 2008

Yael Naim is best known for the Air lap top song "New Soul" (as well as a great and quirky music video, featuring Naim literally creating a world for herself, from the fantastical paintings she adds as embellishments to photos in her new apartment, magically coming to life). Born of Tunisian/Sephardi-Jewish heritage, this new Parisian-born singer breathes new life into music, all the while infusing elements from her heritage into the melodies she sings (complete with muted acoustic guitars, melodica, piano, and what are described as "rhythm sounds" among others). Encouraged by her musical partner, David Donatien, to sing in Hebrew, as well as in French, this album succeeds on many levels. Also, her unexpected cover of "Toxic" (yes, originally recorded by Britney Spears), sounds decidedly understated, almost as though Yael is performing it at a jazz club somewhere, with minimal acoustical accompaniment. The liner notes include both Hebrew and English lyrics, and it's wonderful to see how Yael Naim integrates/fuses together her bicultural (or should I say multicultural?) voyage through music, poetry and musical experimentation.
