A Truly Essential Work April 16, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Amazingly, it's difficult to find a drum instruction method based on just grooving; which, interestingly, is the point in playing the drum set almost all of the time. Igoe actually does what hardly any other author does for the drum set; he teaches one how to groove. Not only that, but this is the most fun program I've ever heard. When you take his Dvd lessons and apply them to the songs from the mp3s, it's just so much fun--it's hard to even explain. I've stayed up until 4 am playing to these songs: trying out different groove variations, fills, and solos, and I don't feel like I'm working--I feel like I'm having fun and don't want to go to bed. Best Dvd/book ever written for the set!
Good value for money for instructional entertainment March 28, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
To be honest, I never heard of Tommy Igoe before purchasing the "Groove Essentials" DVD. I purchased this DVD because of the voluminous contentent (almost 4 hrs), and the variety of the grooves. Tommy is certainly enjoying himself, which makes this dvd both instructional and entertaining. If you are not a beginner, you will find the first grooves very easy, but the grooves get more interesting as the programme progresses. As Tommy says in this dvd - "GO FOR IT" - if you do not have it buy it now. You will not be disappointed.
I'm not an expert February 20, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Tommy Igoe's drum lessons on video have sent my 15 year old daughter on a journey of passion for drums. The lessons aren't boring, nor are they too slow. Being a child always looking for a challenge, boring lessons can turn this 15 year old off an instrument quickly.
Awesome instructional video February 8, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have never submitted a review despite having purchased many items on amazon.com but I felt Tommy Igoe deserved to be complimented for the excellent job he does with his instructional videos. Igoe provides a very personal style of teaching and makes it very easy to understand what he is trying to teach. The camera angles allow you to see hand and foot work at the same time. I recommend this video for drummers of all levels who are looking to expand their "groove vocabulary"!!!!!
Great overview and starting place for exanding your styles January 12, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this after a friend turned me on to the DVD. Tomm Igoe is a very good teacher and a respectable player. I purchased this with the book which comes with more explanation and a mp3 cd - great for dropping in an iPod to practice. If you are not a great sheet music reader and depend more on your ear, the DVD and poster seem to be enough. I bought this for myself and shared it with our worship team's drummer. It definitely opened up his playing and rhythm vocabulary especially in the world beat types: soca, bossa nova, and other latin rhythms. The latin rhtyhms are specifically applied to drum playing and interpretation. This is a great tool to give to a drummer who is ready to move beyond the basic rock groove and to explore other styles. It sets them up with enough knowledge to feel comfortable in a variety of styles.
