An Essential Teaching Tool December 26, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Tommy Igoe's "Groove Essentials" DVD is simply the best drumset instructional I've worked with. The 47 grooves can be used in a variety of musical settings to great effect while serving as exercizes that vastly improve one's coordination and independence.
The mark of a good teacher is not only how much an instructor knows but how well he or she can communicate those ideas and techniques. Tommy's teaching style is clear and articulate and his enthusiasm and love of playing show through in each segment. He also addresses the fears and frustrations we all face when attempting to master new and challenging material reminding us to be patient and have fun.
I've worked with many instructional videos over the years, some good and some downright useless, but "Groove Essentials" is a cut above the rest for really improving one's playing. I only wish that it (and the DVD format) had been around when I started playing some 40 years ago!
Get it - it's a BARGAIN!!
Excellent! Not a beginners DVD!! November 27, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Don't let the title or the fact that Tommy has other beginner type DVDs fool you. This is a great educational tool that will keep you learning new things for a long time. Many drummers that consider themselves semi-pro and even performing for most of their life could learn a TON from this DVD. I used to consider myself intermediate to advanced until I decided I am going to learn everything that I possibly can - now I'm getting an idea of how much I don't know. I thought I could play rock/funk/jazz/R&B with even an attempt at something Latin, but this DVD will teach me plenty in each type of music. Okay honestly it won't teach me much on the rock end but I bought this to learn more world grooves to be both more versatile and coordinated so that no matter what I'm playing I can do it musically and with a spicy flavor that only comes with experience. I got exactly what I was looking for with this DVD. I highly recommend it!!

An instructional DVD that expands your style June 21, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Groove Essentials DVD contains 47 grooves instruction and demonstration in different styles. Styles include 8th-note, 16th-note and half-time Rock; Jazz waltz, shuffle and swing; R&B, Hip-Hop and Funk as well as World music styles. It comes with a poster with all the grooves in this DVD so you can practice without watch the DVD or some loose paper placed somewhere on the drumset; just tape it on the wall.
Beginners will find the Rock section helpful as they tend to be easier to pick up. The more advanced players can expand their playing styles to Jazz, World and the more advanced R&B. I have been playing for 3 years and I find this DVD very helpful. It helps me slowly progress to other styles besides rock and a little bit of hip hop. I find the World section especially helpful as Tommy demonstrated numerous World grooves including Bossa Nova, Soca, Samba, Mambo and many more.
For each groove, he provides general instruction and then demonstrates it with music, beginning by play it slow and then fast. You won't have question as to how he had played a certain groove--clear instruction and demonstration. The only thing that's left to do is to practice it.
Many instructional video out there tends to teach techniques which is very important. This DVD will stretch your learned techniques and develop your 4-limb coordination to create grooves of different style. If you master all these grooves, you will be in very good shape. Most non-professional drummers usually play in 1 or 2 styles of their choice. Learning these grooves will add variety to your playing and make you a more versatile drummer.
If you want to see a few examples, go to Vic Firth website. (Sorry, can't post URL according to guidelines)
great instructional dvd-- too bad only 47 grooves June 8, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
this dvd is phenomenal I bought it because of the price and the fact that it covers so many different grooves. When I opened it up and put it in my dvd I was amazed at the instruction and the manner in which tommy igoe presented the material it was almost like he was in the room with you. He expertly covers rock grooves, r and b, hip hop, funk, jazz, different latin and world grooves and even improved my bossa nova groove, even new orleans second line drumming. He goes over the information independently while talking (which is a skill in itself) covers some pitfalls and gives pointers on then plays the grooves with a band at slow and fast tempos. I am anxiously awaiting any other dvd instructional that tommy igoe comes out with hopefully more grooves and maybe a dvd on fills. Tommy Igoes instructionals are definitely the best.
