5 out of 5 stars Music vs. Movie   April 27, 2000

It was amazing, just figuring how different the prime cut, ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA, could occupy three cuts on the CD, and only one, cut number 10 from the original soundtrack, was used outside of what was heard on the screen. The screen version of this, played on cuts 2 and 8, which starts the movie, and then is played with the scene of the Dawn of Man, is powerfully driven, or powerfully played with more G forces. The original soundtrack does not come close to that. In addition, the booklet tells me about the end of the movie that the book by Clarke did not: it appeared that Dave, riding on the monolith (like Slim Pickens riding on the missile in Dr. Strangelove), went into Jupiter's atmosphere, and saw strange things, which could very well have been like Earth's, except for shades of dark blue version of the Monument Valley. Was that Clarke's off-hand way of telling us that there is intelligent life in this solar system (or Terra system)?

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful music for a movie   March 17, 2000

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the classic movies ever made. One of the things that made it so good was the brilliant use of classical music as a soundtrack. The Blue Danube and Also Sprach Zarathustra are classical masterpieces given new relevance in a modern artwork. I like to play this cd in the morning when I need to get myself mentally focused for the tasks of the day. it also plays well in the afternoon or night. Stanley Kubrick not only possessed a genius for making movies but also for selcting soundtrack music to play in the backdrop.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Marriage of Film to Soundtrack...   February 29, 2000

Before all these great digital advancements of sound and film processing, the best one could hope to experience, say, in 1968, was Cinemascope in a wide screen theatre--the theatre was large enough to have folks swallowed alive in its plush velvet covered seats. Kubrick's "2001: A Space Oddysey" was one of the last of the MGM Cinemascope(with a stereosonic, wraparound soundtrack) big epic movies. Anyone who's seen the film knows how mindblowing it is, and after some thirty years, still is heralded as one of the best films of all time. I know it's left an indeligible impression on me--I had to have been less than 12 or so when I first saw it in it's Cinemascope glory... Everybody can more or less identify "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by it's opening notes, but few remember its great use in 2001 as we, the audience, is taken through the sands of time by the giant Monolith to the dawn of mankind...I remember how the eerie "Requiem for Soprano.." was used when, centuries later, supposedly, a space crew found and unburied the same Monolith from the heavens....and how Strauss' beautiful "Blue Danube" waltz fit perfectly to the scenes of the space vessels in space. Kubrick and his editors are said to be exceptional talents when it came to placing the music with particular film scenes--indeed, I found the music to "A Clockwork Orange" "The Shining" and "Eyes Wide Shut" just as compelling to the overall storytelling. But this is the best marriage of film to soundtrack that I have ever witnessed. You can also place this CD with your classical collection or ambient collection, it'll be at home in either...and you can play it in it's entirety...it's so well crafted, it can stand on it's own (from the visuals). This, my friends, is what artistry is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful selection of music   October 12, 1999

This collection of classical music fits every scene in the movie perfectly. It is a brilliant choice and the usage of the music along with the imagery have helped to create the most influential film of all time, not to mention The Masterpiece of the Twentieth Century. The music is totally immersive, as are the images of the film; When I put this music on for the first time, Especially the Gayene Ballet Suite, I FELT this film. It moved me. All I can say is that this music is simply and absolutely brilliant; not only in the music itself, but more importantly how it is USED. I feel this classical selection is better than the original score that was first planned.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond a doubt, superb   October 2, 1999

From the very start of this cd, one is captured in a romantic vision of our place in th cosmos. From our pre-historical upbring, to the depths of space beheld in Jupiter, we are just a species who have actual done a few things. The music exemplifies this theme, for each individual choral voice in atmospheres is thrown into the background of stellar harmony. This CD is well worth the journey to obtain. When you first put it into the machine, to last stricking momnet of Hal, one is in pure rapture.
