Beautiful violin work! September 27, 2005 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
I purchased this primarily because I so loved the lead violin work that is predominant through the score. It is hauntingly beautiful. (I also ordered the score to The Village by James Newton Howard for the same reason.)
This is one of my all-time favorite scores. I'm sure it will be near the top of my list for years to come.
Avast ye fans of Captain Jack Aubrey! September 8, 2005 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
Okay -- so it took a little longer than I expected. But geez, it was coming from Argentina. And it arrived in great shape. It's a permanent resident of my car's CD changer. A great purchase.
The perfect soundtrack to a great movie August 7, 2005 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
The music to the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World makes a great movie even better. Some points on the soundtrack might sound like a classical CD rather than the score to an action-filled movie; while other areas is booming battle music.
The soundtrack is nearly an hour long, and it starts off with a fantastic battle track which eventually quiets down to some quiet violen music that is heard throughout the whole score. Blasting drums and violens are probably the main instruments and are heard often. The score to Master and Commander is a great addition to anyone's collection and, like the movie, earns a big five stars.

Fabulously rousing and delightfully complex violin/cello interplay; a cameo by Yo-Yo Ma; and a timpani lover's dream score. Only misses that last star due to lengthy dramatic silence or near silence (faint strings) that can only be truly appreciated thru headphones...so it's hard to take this along to all your players.
  One-of-a-Kind July 12, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE: MASTER AND COMMANDER - THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD is certainly one of the best movie soundtracks available today. Its use of percussion and stringed instruments to great extent in various, unique ways creates a musical experience unlike any other.
This soundtrack gets off to a perfect start with track #1, "The Far Side of the World," which contains both the main theme of the movie and a classic, upbeat violin piece that is also featured in track #14. From there, this CD showcases several epic drums-filled tracks such as #2: "Into the Fog," #5: "Smoke n'Oakum," and #13: "The Battle," as well as many violin and/or cello pieces that range from folk songs to stirring, emotional tracks. The ways in which this CD combines both percussion and strings in several tracks gives it a one-of-a-kind quality that is very interesting to listen to.
This score is excellently done in every respect, and I recommend it to anyone who loves to listen to great music.
