Lewis figured it out! March 9, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just can't stop playing this CD! A friend turned me on to British musical talent, Lewis and finally stopped lending me the CD. My addiction started with a fascination for the 2nd track entitled "Bittersweet." After my friend cut me off and demanded I return his CD, I ordered my own CD! It was one of the best purchases I ever made! Taylor's sense of vocal timing, dark textured arrangements and dramatic progressions are arresting. Four months after buying my own CD, each song as proven to be as intriguing and necessary as the song that initially stunned me. Each listening experience provides me with undiscovered musical treats and a delightfully tortured perspective of the kind of love I thought I had outgrown long ago. I've turned others on to his music and had to pressure them into getting a their own Lewis Taylor CDs. If the recent American based "neo-soul" movement thingy ain't doing it for you, I understand. Turn your ear towards the east. The British have it figured out.
Banana Peel Classic February 28, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I call this CD a "banana peel classic", because I "SLIPPED" into a music store, while in London(US Navy), I was looking for something to bring back to the states. In the midst of my searching, I was disturbed by the music that was being played in the store, which was the first track on the CD(Lucky). I asked the clerk who it was playing, she said "Lewis Taylor". By the time the second track(Bittersweet) came on, I was at the counter buying the CD. I really can't put into words how "precise" this CD is. I'll just say that I won't hesitate to get anything else that Lewis Taylor put's out, they will all be "banana peel classics".
Lewis Taylor, musical genius December 26, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's ashame his music is not heard here in the states. His tracks will have your head nodding to his melodic and soulful beats. The album is full of splendid music and should definitely find a home in everyone's music collection.

modern soul masterpiece July 30, 2000 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you remember the Stevie Wonder track "Superwoman" and how the change of feel midway through the track raised the hairs on the back of your neck then prepare to experience an albums worth of the same feelings. What a joy this album is, I'm still discovering new bits to it two years after buying it. I can't think of anything to compare it to as it seems to combine the feel of a 70's curtis mayfield or marvin gaye with the trip hop of massive attack. It's like nothing you've heard before with songs that seem to meander along until bang, the feel changes, the key rises and your emotions are blown apart.Lewis Taylor composed all the material and played the majority of the instruments on the album but don't think that a lack of outside influence had lead to a lack of ideas. A lot of critics have compared this to the seminal "what's goin on" and in some respects it's a great comparison. Almost a concept album in feel, the tracks seem to have a common thread but you could not describe the artist as soul or rnb in fact, i don't think he can be categorised so easily. Lewis himself considers radiohead and the beach boys an influence and i can't think of a soul or rnb artist whose music is tinged with this sort of shadow. If you're a fan of music, forget categories and just buy this cd. It's a gem just waiting to be unearthed.
