NOT SO LUCKY October 18, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This album is truly a work of art. Lewis is highly intelligent musical genius the best of London Soul talent. However before all you Yanks carry on shedding tears over the lack of release of this album over the water can I point out that this guy is so low profile here in London. Every week I search the listings for the chance to see him and sit gagging for his new album , so youre definitely not missing out on the party! Very few have even heard of him over here and his work lies rather hidden away amongst the soul, R&B sections of record shop which for the non expert is a maze of ridiculuous sounding names and a section of the shop one feels to be daunted in unless wearing the right label. Anyway lets hope that the man keeps his international fans happy so that we can all feel lucky .

Not many artists, or many albums can draw you in on the first listen... Lewis can! Every track holds a new surprise in the concept, orchestration, production and most importantly the mind blowing vocals. This album is an absolute must for those who appreciate real talent!
Masterpiece July 11, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album shows what modern soul music can sound like, when written and played by an artist with an open mind and ear for both old and new influences, from the quirky to the essentially groovy, often in the space of the same song. Classic and innovative at the same time. While waiting for the next album, get the singles. They will provide you with more of the same.
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN THROAT July 7, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
From the opening bassline of "Lucky" to the last sad whisper of "Spirit", this album is one wonderful surprise after another. There are many levels on which to appreciate this album: It's a rich and continuous source of superb singing and musicianship, funky, dirty bass lines and often sassy lyrics. There's sweet and tender love songs followed by rude and risque smooching songs, back to back with melancholy vulnerability and brazen machismo. Whatever you want out of music, you will find it here - just WHEN is this guy going to release another album! In the meantime, check out the soundtrack to Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels - a duet with Carleen Anderson called "18 with a Bullet" only increases the appetite for more.
lewis taylor fills a gaping hole in this era's soul music. June 2, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
i discovered lewis taylor at a listening station inside a music store in atlanta. i was swept immediately by the music's rich textures and sophistication. then came the lyrics...the stories spun masterfully by the words chosen, coupled with the soulful delivery of brother taylor.it is a master stroke in the vein of marvin gaye. it is sad that the juvenile musical acts that pass for r+b and soul in the united states continue to be regurgitated and fed to us through the tiny straw of popular radio while gems such as lewis taylor's effort don't get released here. label execs wake the hell up. lewis taylor's cd is the perfect amalgamation of old soul flavor and modern aural sensibilities, rhythms and textures. his voice betrays what certainly must be his most important musical influence [marvin], down to the layering and rhythms of some of the harmonies, and yet taylor still manages to carve out his own soulful vocal identity. i'll be buying anything this brother puts out in the future. speaking of which, i cannot tell if he is a lightly complexioned black man or white, but either way, with an effort like this, he's my brother. i'd love to write some songs for him.
